Barbican Estate .... way down east
Barbican Estate formed in Tokyo in 2019 and consists of Kazuki Toneri(Gt, Sitar), Miri (Ba, Vo), and Koh Hamada (Dr, Percussion). Barbican Estate uses drones, psychedelic soundscapes, driving rhythms, and vivid lyricism to create their massive sound. The bands influences include Japanese psychedelic/noise rock (Les Rallizes Denudes, Kikagakumoyo), US experimental bands (Sonic Youth, SWANS), classic film (D.W Griffith), as well as literary and architectural movements (Beats, Brutalism).
Barbican Estate’s first album ‘Way Down East’ is finally being released on vinyl for the very first time!
The title is inspired by DW Griffith’s film “Way Down East” and was created with the image of a journey from west to east. Side A is mainly influenced by Western pop culture, while side B is inspired by Eastern mysticism.
The album was recorded at Tsubame Studio, a recording studio in Tokyo. Hideki Urawa (Rollo), who has produced Kikagaku Moyo and Satomimagae, was also involved in the mixing and production, and in addition to the organic noise sound produced by vintage equipment, the sound has evolved into a more psychedelic and majestic image.
The artwork and artist photo were designed by Kentaro Takahashi.
Their music, which weaves solid, architectural elements with destruction into a dark and gloomy soundscape, is often described as “dark psychedelic.”
They released their first album, Way Down East, in 2021. In 2022, they relocated to London, UK, where they performed on UK tours and at festivals. Having already played nearly 50 live shows, they are gaining attention in the local scene.
Their latest EP, Viscum, was released in June 2024. The songs and videos they produced with young British creators have also garnered attention.
